Calendar Geeks

Simply, wow.

When I volunteered to do this project, I never expected to be part of such a unique sorority of amazing women.  But, I am.  You all amaze me, with your hearts and passions for your related geekdoms.

Meanwhile.

I just got back from Calontir’s Fiftieth Coronation.  WOW.  Fun event.  And, like what happens to every other event I go to, I seem to get spoilt rotten.  Not that I don’t mind, of course.  I am kicking myself for not taking photos, but that’s all right.  It happens.  Especially when I’m on event overload, and I see friends I haven’t seen for months at events.  At the event (which involved copious amounts of water being poured from the heavens, thanks to Hurricane Ike), not only were my kingdom’s monarchs crowned, but several good bits of fun were to be had by all.  From revelry around the campfire (when it finally decided to stop raining), to dancing, to courts, to the pretty clothes, it was simply a good time.  And I get why the SCA exists.  It’s more than history geeks.  It’s more than beating each other senselessly with rattan weapons.  It’s about friends.  Family.  Gathering together, making memories, and remembering those who aren’t with us.

Granted, I may not be the “typical” SCAdian, but in some ways, I think I am.  I recall seeing a group of people, new to the SCA gather around the bardic fires with a look of wonder and awe on their faces.  Honestly, in our busy lives, when do we see that?  Many of us just let it pass by.  I know I have.  And yet, it’s in these people that are new to the Society, that stoke the fires of creativity, that give us further passion to burn for our love of medieval things.

I think I’ll stop for tonight.  But I will certainly say that last weekend will stay in my memories for a good long time.

P.S.  If you haven’t registered to vote, do so.  Make your own history.

P.P.S.  If you haven’t bought your calendar yet, do it.  Who knows, you might be able to get some of us to autograph it for you.

Just a quick reminder to all of you out there who are over 18, don’t forget to register to vote!  We’re quickly coming up on some important elections and registering to vote can be one of those things that get de-prioritized when Real Life (or, say, Too Human) comes calling.

Also, got a look at the XBox360 game that’s upcoming, Wet.  Woooooo!  Looks like Lara Croft has one helluva battle for her throne coming up.  Here’s the trailer to, er, whet your appetite.  Heh, sorry.  Couldn’t help the awful pun.

… and, because actually, it’s my summer holiday, I don’t want to learn how to model “the behaviour of electrons in atoms and molecules” yet[1] - learn how to make Sierpinski cookies.

While we’re on the subject of fractal food, Romanesco broccoli is an oldie but a goodie.

P.S. in the event that you listened to Prom 16 - the Hallé playing, um, Butterworth and Vaughn Williams and Bruch and Till Eulenspeigel (guess which I was most interested in) - and were wondering why someone yelled “Mambo!” at the beginning of the second half? It’s a slightly long story, but it involves one of the German girls who was staying with me, and the fact that CHMYO was rehearsing Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

[1] Why Chemical Reactions Happen is very good, but I’m finding it slightly hard going. It has quantum in.
